Is a lightning arrester necessary for a home solar installation?

My vendor says the Lightning Arrester (LA) is optional and I can save ₹3000 by removing it. My house is a 2-story building surrounded by taller apartments. Do I really need it?

Yes, it is absolutely necessary. Not only is it a crucial safety feature to protect your expensive inverter and panels from indirect lightning surges, but DISCOMs mandate proper AC, DC, and LA earthing before they approve the net metering connection. Even if taller buildings surround you, power surges can travel through the grid. Do not skip the LA or the chemical earthing pits.
