What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Launched in February 2024 with a budget of ₹75,021 crore, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government's flagship scheme to install rooftop solar on 1 crore Indian households. The goal: provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month and reduce middle-class electricity bills to near-zero. Administered by MNRE, the subsidy is disbursed via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly to your bank account after commissioning.
Subsidy Slabs (2026)
| System Capacity | Central Subsidy | Max Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 2 kW | ₹30,000 per kW | ₹60,000 |
| 2 kW to 3 kW (third kW) | ₹18,000 per kW | ₹18,000 |
| 3 kW and above | Capped | ₹78,000 |

- Upload commissioning certificate on the portal
- Subsidy credited to your bank account — 30–60 days after certificate upload
Documents Required
- Latest electricity bill (consumer number + name)
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account details linked to Aadhaar (for DBT)
- Property ownership proof (ration card / property tax receipt)
Can I install before applying?
No. You must receive DISCOM feasibility approval before installation begins. Installing without approval means you will not be eligible for the subsidy and your DISCOM may refuse to commission the net meter.
How long does the full process take?
On average, 2–4 months from application to subsidy receipt. The biggest variable is your DISCOM's speed in approving feasibility and installing the net meter. Urban DISCOMs (BESCOM, MSEDCL) are faster than rural ones.
