How to Calculate Inverter Capacity for Your Home

Choosing the wrong inverter size is one of the most common mistakes Indian homeowners make. An undersized inverter trips under load, while an oversized one wastes money. This inverter capacity calculator helps you find the exact inverter size you need in three steps:

  1. List your appliances — Select every appliance you want to run during a power cut.
  2. Apply a 25% safety margin — Inverters should not be run at 100% capacity. The calculator automatically adds 25%.
  3. Convert to VA rating — Divide by the power factor (0.8) to get the VA rating, then round up to the next standard inverter size.

Inverter Capacity Formula

The standard formula used in the industry:

Required VA = (Total Load in Watts × 1.25) ÷ 0.8

For example, if you want to run appliances totalling 1000W:

(1000 × 1.25) ÷ 0.8 = 1562.5 VA → Round up to 2000 VA inverter

How Many Batteries Do I Need?

The battery capacity required depends on your load and desired backup time. The formula is:

Ah Required = (Total Load × Backup Hours) ÷ (Battery Voltage × 0.8 efficiency)

Indian homes typically use 12V, 150Ah tubular batteries. Divide the total Ah required by 150 to get the number of batteries needed (always round up).

Frequently Asked Questions About Inverter Sizing

How do I calculate inverter capacity for my home? +
Add up the wattage of all appliances you want to run simultaneously. Multiply this total by 1.25 (25% safety margin) to get the minimum inverter wattage. Then divide by 0.8 (power factor) to get the required VA rating. For example, if your total load is 800W: 800 × 1.25 = 1000W ÷ 0.8 = 1250 VA. The next standard size up is 1500 VA.
What is the difference between kVA and kW in an inverter? +
kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the apparent power rating of the inverter, while kW (kilowatt) is the actual power output. The ratio between them is the power factor, typically 0.8 for home inverters. So a 1 kVA inverter can handle about 800W of actual load. Always use the kVA rating when comparing inverters.
Can I run a 1.5 ton AC on a home inverter? +
Yes, but you need a high-capacity inverter. A 1.5 ton AC draws about 1500W. With a safety margin, you need at least a 2.5 kVA or 3.5 kVA inverter if running the AC along with other appliances. Note that regular lead-acid inverters may not handle the starting current of ACs — look for inverters specifically rated for air conditioners.
How many batteries do I need for 4 hours of backup? +
The formula is: Ah = (Total Load in Watts × Backup Hours) ÷ (Battery Voltage × Efficiency). For a 500W load, 4 hours backup on a 12V battery at 80% efficiency: (500 × 4) ÷ (12 × 0.8) = 208 Ah. You would need at least a 150 Ah battery, or two 150 Ah batteries for comfortable backup. Standard 150 Ah tubular batteries are most common in India.
Which inverter brand is best in India in 2026? +
Top inverter brands in India include Luminous (most popular, widest service network), Microtek (affordable and reliable), Exide (excellent batteries and inverters), Amaron (premium quality), Su-Kam (pioneered solar inverters), and Genus (good rural penetration). For most homes, Luminous or Microtek offer the best value for money.
