Once the application is reviewed, the DISCOM conducts a technical feasibility study to ensure the local transformer can handle the extra load. Upon approval, you receive a feasibility clearance, after which your vendor can install the solar plant. Post-installation, the DISCOM inspects the setup, tests the inverter and grounding, and installs a bidirectional net meter. Only after this meter is sealed and a net metering agreement is signed can you legally turn on your solar system and start exporting power.
While the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) mandates swift approvals, real-world timelines vary by state. In progressive states like Gujarat (MGVCL, DGVCL) and Maharashtra (MSEDCL), the entire process from application to meter installation typically takes 15 to 30 days due to streamlined digital portals. In contrast, states with more complex bureaucratic structures may take 30 to 45 days. It's always best to follow up with your local sub-divisional officer (SDO) or Junior Engineer (JE) directly if applications are pending beyond two weeks.
