Connected load is the total wattage of all appliances if run simultaneously. Solar load is the actual energy consumed per day, calculated as wattage × usage hours. Since appliances don't all run at the same time, solar load (daily kWh) is a better measure for sizing a solar system. Connected load determines the inverter size; daily kWh determines the panel capacity needed.

To generate 10 kWh/day in India (average 5 peak sun hours), you need a 2kW solar system. With 400W panels, that is 5 panels. The formula: panels needed = daily kWh ÷ (panel wattage in kW × peak sun hours). For 10 kWh at 5 PSH with 400W panels: 10 ÷ (0.4 × 5) = 5 panels.

Peak sun hours (PSH) is the number of hours per day when solar irradiance averages 1,000 W/m². In India, PSH ranges from 4.2 (Northeast) to 6.2 (Rajasthan). Higher PSH means more generation per kW installed. To find the system size needed: divide your daily load (kWh) by your city's PSH. Example: 8 kWh/day at 5 PSH = 1.6kW system needed.
