Dust accumulation, or 'soiling,' is one of the primary reasons solar panel systems in India underperform. India's diverse geography includes highly arid regions, heavily polluted cities, and extensive agricultural lands—all of which contribute massive amounts of particulate matter to the air. When this dust settles on your solar panels, it blocks sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic cells, directly reducing electricity generation.
Soiling Loss Data for Major Indian Cities: According to various MNRE and independent studies, regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat experience some of the highest soiling rates globally. A panel left uncleaned in these states can easily lose 0.35% to 0.5% of its efficiency every single day. In contrast, coastal areas like Kerala or Goa experience lower daily dust accumulation, but are susceptible to sticky grime formed by high humidity and salt spray, which is harder to wash off.

For large rooftop installations (above 50 kW) or ground-mounted utility solar farms, automated robotic cleaners have proven highly cost-effective. While the upfront investment is significant, the elimination of recurring water and labor costs, coupled with a constant 0% soiling loss due to daily cleaning, usually results in a return on investment (ROI) within 2 to 3 years. For residential systems, manual wet cleaning every 2-4 weeks remains the most practical and economical approach.
Depending on your location and the level of dust, uncleaned solar panels can lose anywhere from 5% to over 30% of their energy generation potential. In high-dust areas like Rajasthan or near construction sites, losses accumulate quickly, significantly reducing your financial savings.
For most of India, cleaning your solar panels once every 2 to 4 weeks (monthly) is recommended. However, in highly polluted or dusty areas (like Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan), or if you live near an active highway/farm, you might need to clean them bi-weekly or even weekly for optimal performance.
States in arid regions such as Rajasthan and Gujarat face severe dust storms, resulting in very high soiling rates. Additionally, regions with heavy agricultural activities (Punjab, Haryana) or high industrial/vehicular pollution (Delhi NCR, parts of UP and Maharashtra) also suffer from significant dust accumulation on solar panels.
Heavy rain can wash away loose dust and slightly improve performance, especially if your panels are tilted at more than 15-20 degrees. However, light rain or drizzle can actually make things worse by turning the settled dust into a sticky layer of mud that requires manual wet cleaning to remove.
